With the real estate market the way it is, many people are not in a position to sell their homes. They cannot get into the bigger and nicer house that they want, but they don't like their home the way it is. The answer to this dilemma is often a remodel.
Remodeling can make drastic improvments to your property, but won't cost nearly as much as buying a new home. Another great thing about remodeling is that it doesn't all have to be done in one go. If you need to remodel most of your home, you can go room by room as you have the money.
The best way to do this is to decide which room is bugging you the worst. If the rest of your house is "ok" but the kitchen just makes you want to tear your hair out, you should probably start there.
One of the first things you need to do is to figure out your budget. How much money do you have to do this project? With the way the economy is right now, you will want to avoid getting a loan if at all possible. It is better to save up for awhile and do everything with cash.
Another thing you need to do is to figure out exactly what you want to change in the room/house. Flooring? Lighting? Cabinets? Paint? All of the above? Make a list of everything you want to spruce up. Then you can either order the list by which changes are most important, or you can order them by price. What ever works best for you.
These are the two crucial first steps to a remodel project. Which you do first is up to you. Some people like to figure out the budget first, and others like to make their entire wish-list before getting into budgets and pricing.
Keep in mind that even an entire room doesn't have to be done all at once. If you change the flooring or cabinets in a room, the lighting can be changed later. While some things have to be tackled all at once, such as cabinets and countertops, don't let yourself think that remodel projects are all-or-nothing.
Start looking around your home and thinking about what the first thing you would change is. Don't rush this process. If you are going to do it, you want to do it right.
In the end, if it is done properly, remodeling your home is like getting a new house without paying for it.

Home Improvement Fever
Home improvement and decorating is a passion of mine. My family owns a General Contracting business, and I help out with the designing and interior decorating of the houses. I’m always on the lookout for cool and innovative things people can put in their homes.
I’m interested in any area of the home and what you can do with it, and I just wanted a place to share my findings with the world. :)
New construction and remodels are fascinating and fun in their own ways. With new construction you can plan everything out just the way you want it. Every little thing falls together at the end, and you can just stand back and be proud of what you’ve accomplished. With remodels it can be a little trickier, because you have to work things in around what is still there, but this is part of the fun! If you think of it as a kind of big puzzle, it doesn’t seem like such a chore.
I also love things like home theaters and decks! Any improvement that can be made to a house is just neat, but you don’t have to be a professional to do any of this! You can do all this yourself, at least the designing aspect. All you need is some creativity, and perhaps a place to start, which I will try to provide.
One thing I really hate to see is people who are not happy with some aspect of their current home, or who don’t know how to make the home they want to build exactly the way they want it. There are so many things you can do to be happier with where you are! It shouldn’t just be a house you live in! It should be a home!
Keep an eye on my blog if you would. I’ll decide where I’m going to start and work from there. Who knows where the ideas will come from? It could be a project I’m working on, or some article I see in a magazine. Whatever I write about, I hope it will be interesting to all!
